October opens with three ranked-versus-ranked games, and all three send the higher-ranked team on the road: Alabama to Mississippi State, Ohio State to Iowa, and Florida to Missouri. Miami’s nighttime visit to Clemson adds another compelling test, while Friday’s unbeaten ACC showdown gets the weekend moving before Saturday’s full slate.
THE THREE RANKED SHOWDOWNS
Alabama at Mississippi State — Noon, ABC
Alabama’s official game notes show a 16-game winning streak in this series, but Mississippi State arrives with a fresh 31–24 home win over Missouri. The Bulldogs now get another chance to turn Davis Wade Stadium into a difficult road assignment.
CFN scouting focus: Watch the quarterbacks, Alabama’s Keelon Russell and Mississippi State’s Kamario Taylor, but start with the offensive lines. State needs manageable third downs and possessions that end in points. Alabama can quiet the atmosphere by protecting the pocket and forcing the Bulldogs to chase the score. An early defensive stop followed by a sustained drive would be more useful to State than trading quick possessions.

Ohio State at Iowa — 3:30 p.m., CBS
Iowa earned its 20–19 win at Michigan with a 91-yard final drive and Hank Brown’s fourth-down touchdown pass to Reece Vander Zee on the last play. That finish showed the Hawkeyes can produce under pressure. Their 58 rushing yards on 24 carries also identify an area to watch closely against Ohio State.
CFN scouting focus: Iowa needs enough success on the ground to keep its passing game out of obvious long-yardage situations. Field position and special teams can help create shorter scoring opportunities, but the Hawkeyes cannot assume another dramatic final drive will rescue them. For Ohio State, the priority is to prevent short fields and make Iowa repeatedly drive the length of the field. This is CFN’s first choice for the afternoon screen.

Florida at Missouri — 3:30 p.m., ABC
Florida travels to Columbia after beating Ole Miss 52–28. Jadan Baugh carried 29 times for 142 yards and three touchdowns in that victory, earning national Doak Walker recognition. Missouri, meanwhile, returns home after its seven-point loss at Mississippi State.
CFN scouting focus: Missouri’s first task is to keep Florida’s running game from setting the terms of every possession. The Gators need to carry their physical play onto the road and convert promising drives into touchdowns. Watch Missouri’s tackling after first contact and Florida’s response when a possession stalls. The useful test for Florida is whether last week’s strong finish becomes a repeatable performance.

THE NIGHT GAME TO CIRCLE
Miami at Clemson — 7:30 p.m., ABC
Miami brings a 4–0 overall record and a 2–0 ACC mark to Memorial Stadium. Clemson is 3–1 and also 2–0 in conference play. The Tigers’ official preview sets up a home opportunity against an AP top-five opponent, with both teams trying to protect an unbeaten conference record.
CFN scouting focus: Clemson needs defensive stops that let the crowd influence the next possession. Miami needs clean communication, secure ball handling and composure when a drive goes backward. Third-down protection and red-zone execution should tell us more than early yardage totals. Alongside the ranked SEC and Big Ten games, this is a strong primetime choice.

Two more to keep handy: Michigan at Minnesota (Saturday, Noon, FOX) offers a response test for the Wolverines after the Iowa finish. Baylor at Arizona State (Saturday, 10:30 p.m., ESPN) is CFN’s late-window choice for viewers staying with the action after the primetime games.
THURSDAY RECAP: NORTH TEXAS 45, TULSA 44 — OVERTIME
Thursday, October 1, at H.A. Chapman Stadium: Tulsa led 17–10 at halftime, fell behind 31–17 in the third quarter, and rallied to force overtime. JD Drew’s late interception gave Tulsa a short field, and Baylor Hayes finished the tying drive with a 10-yard touchdown run with 31 seconds left. The extra point made it 38–38.
North Texas quarterback Tayven Jackson scored on a one-yard run in overtime, and the extra point made it 45–38. Damari Alston answered with a two-yard Tulsa touchdown, but the Golden Hurricane’s two-point attempt was stopped. North Texas won the American Conference opener for both teams.
Hayes accounted for five Tulsa touchdowns—three passing and two rushing—while Oran Singleton caught 11 passes for 104 yards. Jackson threw for 332 yards and four touchdowns for North Texas; Jahiem White rushed for 219 yards and a touchdown. Both teams finished the night 3–2.
CFN takeaway: Tulsa’s late response made the finish compelling, but North Texas won the decisive conversion play. The result is an early reminder to keep the American Conference on the viewing list alongside the ranked games.
