GAME RECAP | SEPTEMBER 18, 2026
Texas Tech rallied from an early 10-0 deficit and stopped Houston's potential tying two-point conversion to win 28-26 in Lubbock on September 18.
Houston quarterback Conner Weigman found Patrick Overmyer for a ten-yard touchdown with 49 seconds remaining. Weigman then scrambled on the conversion attempt, but replay confirmed that his knee was down before the ball crossed the goal line.
J'Koby Williams put Texas Tech ahead with a 29-yard touchdown run early in the second half. Cameron Dickey added a one-yard score in the fourth quarter, providing the cushion that Houston nearly erased.
Will Hammond threw for 257 yards. Kenny Johnson caught four passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. The victory gave Texas Tech a 1-0 start in Big 12 play and its eighth consecutive win over Houston.
CFN TAKEAWAY
Texas Tech had to recover from a slow start and then defend the lead through Houston's final response. The comeback mattered, but the conversion stop was the play that prevented the Cougars from drawing level.
